Course Description

This course is designed to inform the student about the basic usage of a personal computer. The course begins with an overview of personal computer basics. These basics include a description of hardware, various types of software, and usage. The course then moves into an introduction of the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. The student will learn the basics needed to navigate and use the operating system for everyday use. An introduction to Microsoft Word is next. Microsoft Word is the most popular word processor in use today. In this introduction you will learn the skills necessary to do basic word processing. Microsoft Excel is the next area to be explored in the course. Excel is an extremely powerful spreadsheet program that can be used for accounting or "what-if" analysis. The last area explored is the Internet. The Internet has become an essential tool in the business world today. In this section, the students will learn some of the terminology currently being used on the internet today. Emphasis is placed on efficient navigation of the internet, as well as the utilization of search engines. Once the student has finished this course, he/she will have enough of an understanding of the personal computer and its components, to effectively make use of its power.

 

Course Objectives

Ø     Understand the term Personal Computer and the terminology associated with it

Ø      Learn about the different components that make up a computer, including hardware, software, memory, and storage

Ø      How to properly turn on and off the computer

Ø      Be introduced to the Microsoft Windows XP operating system

Ø      How to work with Windows XP's components

Ø      Learn the different ways that Windows XP can be customized

Ø      Learn simple file maintenance

Ø      Learn what a word processor is and what it can do

Ø      Examine Microsoft Word's screen

Ø      Create a document

Ø      Saving a document

Ø      Formatting the appearance of the document, including font formatting as well as page layout

Ø      Understanding the concepts of a spreadsheet

Ø      Examining the appearance of Microsoft Excel

Ø      Creating a worksheet

Ø      Utilizing formulas as well as built in mathematical functions

Ø      Formatting the appearance of the worksheet

Ø      Printing the worksheet

Ø      Defining the Internet

Ø      Examining the terminology commonly used on the Internet

Ø      Using a Web Browser to access the World Wide Web

Ø      Accessing links on web pages

Ø      Searching for specific information on the Internet

Ø      Using e-mail using Microsoft Outlook Express

Duration

The duration of the course is two-and-a-half days or six evenings. The days begin at 9:00 am and end at 4:30 pm. The evenings begin at 7:00 pm and end at 10:00 pm.
